ABC has indefinitely suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! following controversial statements Kimmel made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The move comes after several local ABC affiliates (including those operated by Nexstar), announced they would no longer air the program.
Kimmel, during monologues on Monday and Tuesday nights, said “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.” His remarks sparked backlash, with certain stations calling them “offensive and insensitive” and arguing they did not align with community standards.
Nexstar, which runs 23 ABC-affiliated stations, confirmed it would drop the show beginning Wednesday. “Mr. Kimmel’s comments … are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse,” said Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr also reacted sharply, calling Kimmel’s assertions “truly sick” and saying his agency has grounds to hold ABC, Disney, and Kimmel accountable for spreading misleading narratives.
At around the time of the suspension, Kimmel left the studio in Hollywood, entering a waiting vehicle. Audience members who had lined up for the taping were turned away, reportedly with little explanation.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has aired on ABC since 2003. The network has not formally explained the reasoning for the suspension, and Kimmel has yet to issue a public response. His contract was set to expire in May 2026.
Former President Donald Trump praised the decision on his social media platform Truth Social, writing: “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done.”
