Vince Zampella, the video game creator best known for co-founding Call of Duty and leading studios behind some of the most successful shooter franchises of the last two decades, died on December 21, 2025, at age 55. He was killed in a single-car crash on California’s Angeles Crest Highway, north of Los Angeles. A passenger in the vehicle also died. Authorities have not yet released details about what caused the crash.
Zampella had been driving a 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS when the vehicle left the roadway shortly after exiting a tunnel, struck a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Zampella was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene. The passenger was ejected and later died at a hospital.
Industry peers and the companies he helped build responded with tributes highlighting his influence on modern gaming. Electronic Arts, which acquired Zampella’s Respawn Entertainment in 2017, acknowledged the loss in a statement, saying, “Vince was a visionary leader whose creativity, passion, and dedication shaped the future of interactive entertainment. His impact will be felt for generations of players and developers.”
Zampella rose to prominence in the early 2000s. Alongside collaborators Jason West and Grant Collier, he co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002 and helped launch Call of Duty in 2003. The franchise quickly became one of the world’s most successful entertainment properties, eventually selling more than 500 million copies worldwide and redefining expectations for first-person shooters and multiplayer experiences.
After leaving Infinity Ward, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010. Under his leadership, the studio released Titanfall, Apex Legends, and later expanded into narrative-driven action games with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Each project reflected his focus on movement, pacing, and player-first design.
Later in his career, Zampella took on a broader leadership role at Electronic Arts, where he was tapped to oversee the Battlefield franchise. His involvement led to a renewed direction for the series, culminating in the release of Battlefield 6 in 2025.
Beyond his commercial success, Zampella was widely respected as a mentor and studio leader. Developers who worked with him often credited his ability to balance creative freedom with clear direction, helping teams innovate while delivering games at massive scale. His influence continues to shape modern shooter design, live-service models, and multiplayer storytelling.
Zampella is survived by three children. Plans for a public memorial have not been announced.
