The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max continue Apple’s high-end strategy with larger displays and advanced internals. The Pro has a 6.3 inch display, while the Pro Max offers a 6.9 inch display. Both panels use 120 Hz OLED technology.
Performance comes from the A19 Pro processor, supported by a new vapor chamber cooling system for better sustained performance. The rear camera system includes a 48 MP wide, 48 MP ultra wide, and a 48 MP periscope telephoto with 8x zoom, plus a LiDAR depth sensor. The front camera is 18 MP.
Apple says the A19 Pro offers up to 40 percent better sustained performance compared to the A18 Pro, thanks to the inclusion of a vapor chamber design. This improvement is ideal for power-intensive tasks like gaming, video editing, and running local AI models. The chip also features cache and memory upgrades, with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core.
Benchmark Data
Early Geekbench 6 results show the A19 Pro achieves approximately 12 percent faster single-core CPU performance and 14 percent multi-core speed over the A18 Pro. On the GPU side, Metal scores demonstrate a 40 percent faster GPU, highlighting significant graphics gains.
Battery Upgrades
The iPhone 17 Pro lineup also delivers notable improvements in endurance, with the Pro Max offering the largest battery ever in an iPhone. Apple states the Pro Max is capable of up to 39 hours of video playback on a single charge, while the Pro achieves slightly less but still delivers all-day longevity. Both models benefit from the energy efficiency of the A19 Pro chip and the new vapor chamber cooling system, which helps sustain performance without sacrificing power. The combination of hardware efficiency and the larger physical battery in the Pro Max makes it the go-to model for users who prioritize maximum runtime.
Technical Architecture Enhancements
The A19 Pro uses a 3 nm TSMC N3P process, includes a 6-core CPU (2 performance + 4 efficiency cores), and a 6-core GPU with neural accelerators in each core. It also features a neural engine reportedly offering up to 3× GPU compute compared to the A18 Pro. Efficiency cores get a 50 percent larger last-level cache, with improved front-end bandwidth and branch prediction.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, NFC, USB-C with 10 Gb/s transfer, Thread, UWB, and optional LEO satellite features. Storage ranges from 256 GB to 2 TB, with the highest option reserved for the Pro Max.
