A new modding kit called BrickBoy is about to make it possible to convert a Lego Game Boy build into a fully functioning gaming handheld. The kit is launching via Kickstarter, aiming to make what once was a static LEGO model capable of running Game Boy games through emulation.

The foundation of the kit is surprisingly accessible: the electronics board fits into the cartridge slot of the Lego Game Boy instead of the decorative LEGO list of modules. Users can install the display and button mechanics in about five minutes—and no tools are required. A lower-cost version—the “Essential Kit”—supports original Game Boy titles and uses two AA batteries, which causes the case to bulge slightly on the back. A higher-end “Gamer Kit” supports Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance titles, adds Bluetooth headphone support, wireless game transfers over WiFi, adjustable display lighting and variable emulator speed.

Notably, the kit includes a 2.4-inch display built-in, a mainboard, and all necessary buttons. The process was demonstrated publicly by modder Natalie the Nerd and will be made available widely once the Kickstarter campaign goes live on October 28, 2025. What sets BrickBoy apart is how it uses the Game Boy cartridge slot as the host for the electronics, allowing the build to remain largely unchanged while gaining full functionality.

With the kit, users cannot play original cartridges as hardware; games must be loaded via emulation. That means classic cartridges cannot be used. But for fans of retro handhelds, the ability to turn a stylish Lego replica into a portable emulator is a built-in novelty. This project sits at the intersection of toy, display piece and usable device.

The higher tier model directly addresses power and performance: while the essential model uses AA batteries, the gamer model includes a built-in battery pack. The gamer version also supports Color and Advance titles rather than just first-generation Game Boy games. The additional features add to the price but push the mod toward a more complete handheld experience.

BrickBoy speaks to the enthusiasm of hobbyists who enjoy custom handheld builds, retro gaming and clever hardware mash-ups. It offers a compelling option for those interested in modding without building everything from scratch. As the campaign starts, the community will be watching to see how easy the final kit is to install, how well it handles battery life and emulator compatibility, and whether the playing experience lives up to the promise.
