Cleto Escobedo III, the longtime bandleader of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and one of Jimmy Kimmel’s closest lifelong friends, has died at the age of 59.
Kimmel announced the news in an emotional social media post, calling Escobedo “a great friend, father, son, musician, and man.” He shared that the two had been inseparable since childhood, meeting when they were just nine years old. “Working together every day was a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true,” Kimmel wrote.
Escobedo had led the house band, Cleto and the Cletones, since Jimmy Kimmel Live! debuted in 2003. Known for his warm personality and musical precision, he played a key role in shaping the sound and spirit of the show. His chemistry with Kimmel became a defining part of the program’s identity, often serving as the heart of its lighthearted energy.
Before his late-night tenure, Escobedo built an impressive music career performing with Earth, Wind & Fire, Marc Anthony, and Paula Abdul. A gifted saxophonist, he brought funk and jazz influences to the stage, always delivering with quiet confidence and unmistakable groove.
In recent weeks, Kimmel had taken time away from the show to be with Escobedo and his family. The cause of death has not been confirmed.
For fans and colleagues alike, Escobedo’s passing marks the loss of more than a bandleader—it’s the loss of a musician who helped define the rhythm of modern late-night television. He was admired for his talent, loyalty, and warmth, both on and off the stage.
