In today’s Nintendo Direct, Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a full-scale remake of the PlayStation classic Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The game will launch on February 5, 2026, across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store).

Updated Visuals and Artistic Direction

The remake reimagines character and environmental designs by Akira Toriyama in a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic. Square Enix describes it as a “living storybook” presentation, preserving the charm of the original while delivering modern graphical fidelity.

Enhanced Narrative and Gameplay

Square Enix confirmed the narrative remains faithful to the original but is streamlined for better pacing. Optional side quests and minigames will enrich the main storyline, offering additional content without slowing progress.

Revamped Combat and Systems

The turn-based battle system gets significant upgrades. Additions include:

  • A “Moonlighting” vocation feature, allowing characters to use two professions simultaneously.
  • A “Let Loose” ability, triggered when a character becomes enraged, enabling high-impact attacks.
  • A new “Monster Master” vocation, which features a perk called Positive Reinforcement, summoning powerful monsters to aid in battle.

World Exploration

Players will journey through multiple islands, unlocking fragmented paths and sealed-away continents. The world opens gradually through exploration, tablet collection, and quest completion. The game emphasizes exploration, challenging dungeons, lively towns, and character-driven narratives.

Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses

Square Enix confirmed several editions at launch:

A Digital Deluxe Edition offer includes early access (48 hours before launch), a special costume for Ruff, and the same three DLC packs. Preorders also grant an Early Bird Bonus that features a unique Dragon Quest VIII costume for the Hero and three Seeds of Proficiency. Digital purchasers receive a Slime Shield per platform as a bonus.

A Collector’s Edition (via Square Enix Store) includes the game, a steelbook case, a plush smile slime, a “ship in a bottle” figure, and DLC packs (“The Road of Regal Wretches,” “Luminary’s Livery,” and “Jam-Packed Swag Bag”) plus the Ruff Costume DLC.
