Elton John says he’s gearing up for another burst of songwriting after receiving a new batch of lyrics from Bernie Taupin. During a recent interview, John shared that Taupin has sent him the words to seven new songs, and he’s already feeling energized by what he’s read.
“It’s all very new and I can’t wait to start working on them,” John said, describing the material as “really, really good.” He explained that Taupin still surprises him with how strong his writing can be, even after more than five decades of partnership. “Every time he sends me lyrics, it’s like opening a Christmas present,” he added.
John said he plans to head into the studio with producer Andrew Watt, who worked with him on The Lockdown Sessions and other recent projects. According to John, the goal is to craft something modern and musically adventurous, similar to the energy he felt while working with Watt before. He noted that his voice is in the best condition it’s been in for years, partly because he’s no longer touring. That break from the road has given him more time to rest and focus on studio work.
Taupin, who published his memoir Scattershot last year, has been hinting at wanting to get back into deeper collaboration with John. Their last full album of original material together was 2016’s Wonderful Crazy Night. While John has continued making music in the years since, much of it has involved guest appearances and collaborations rather than full-scale songwriting with Taupin.
John didn’t reveal details about what the seven new songs might sound like, but he made it clear he’s ready to dive in as soon as the studio schedule aligns. “I’m itching to get started,” he said. The comments suggest that a new project from the legendary songwriting duo may not be far off.
