From August 20th through 24th, 2025, Cologne’s Koelnmesse once again became ground zero for the global gaming world, as Gamescom 2025 brought together developers, publishers, hardware makers, and fans across five packed days. With thousands of games on display and major announcements unfolding in Opening Night Live and beyond, this year’s show was filled with both spectacle and surprises.
Gamescom officially kicked off on August 19th with Opening Night Live. The standout was Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which premiered gameplay footage of its co-op campaign while teasing Zombies and a new Endgame PvE mode. The reveal also introduced new cast members Milo Ventimiglia and Kiernan Shipka, giving the series a cinematic boost. Other major moments included The Outer Worlds 2, Ninja Gaiden 4, DLC for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and a full cinematic for World of Warcraft: Midnight.
One of the biggest surprises on the show floor came at the Xbox booth, where attendees finally got hands-on time with Hollow Knight: Silksong on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld. Microsoft also highlighted more than 20 games, from The Outer Worlds 2 to expansions for World of Warcraft.
Meanwhile, the Future Games Show delivered a strong lineup of indie and mid-tier titles, including Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, the creatively ambitious skate., and the horror survival title Cronos: The New Dawn.
Tech & Gear
Gamescom isn’t just about software, hardware makers had their moment too. TechRadar’s “Best of Gamescom Awards 2025” spotlighted innovations such as the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W monitor and the Turtle Beach Racer wheel. On the games side, 007: First Light, Kirby Air Riders, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword all took home awards.
Controversies & Challenges
Not everything went smoothly. Fans complained about long queues, pricey concessions, and convoluted booth promotions. More seriously, 60 customs agents raided the venue on day one, inspecting roughly 150 security staff. The operation uncovered issues like unregistered workers, wage violations, and even one underage guard, sparking debate about labor standards at large conventions.
Despite these challenges, Gamescom 2025 reaffirmed its role as a global hub for gaming culture. It offered blockbuster reveals, space for indie creativity, and glimpses of the tech that will define how we play in years to come. From Call of Duty to Silksong, from OLED displays to grassroots indies, the show captured gaming’s range better than any other event on the calendar.
