Rockstar Games is preparing for what it believes will be the largest game debut ever with the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for May 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The expectation came to light through a Rockstar job posting for a lead software engineer in its New York online services division. The listing originally described the role as helping the company prepare for “the largest game launch in history,” with infrastructure designed to handle “millions of players worldwide.” The post has since been edited, but the bold claim caught attention across the gaming industry.
Industry analysts suggest those projections may not be far-fetched. Forecasts indicate GTA 6 could reach 40 million units sold in its first year, setting a new benchmark for video game sales. However, massive launches often face growing pains, with risks such as overloaded servers and technical hiccups at release.
It remains unclear whether GTA 6’s online mode will be included on day one. Rockstar has previously staggered multiplayer releases, as seen with GTA 5, where GTA Online arrived weeks after the single-player game. Fans will be watching closely to see if Rockstar repeats this approach.
