Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a new, multi-season Harry Potter series that will adapt the seven novels over the course of a decade. The company describes the series as a faithful adaptation that will introduce the story to a new generation while coexisting with the films. The series is produced at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the long-time home of the Wizarding World. HBO has set the release window for 2027.
HBO tapped Francesca Gardiner as writer and showrunner, with Mark Mylod set to direct multiple episodes. Both previously worked on Succession, and Mylod’s recent credits include The Menu and Game of Thrones. J. K. Rowling serves as an executive producer alongside David Heyman, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts.
Production began in July 2025 at Leavesden. HBO released a first look image of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter when filming kicked off and reiterated the 2027 premiere plan.
The new cast
HBO is building an all-new ensemble for the reboot. Confirmed cast to date includes a mix of young leads and veteran character actors.
- Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
- Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom
- Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley
- Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch
- Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander
- Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley
These names were announced across HBO’s production start update and subsequent cast drops reported the same day. Expect additional waves of casting as production continues.
HBO and WBD have positioned the project as a long-running television adaptation, with each season focused on a single book. That structure allows character arcs, Hogwarts life, and the larger wizarding world to breathe in ways not possible in the two to three hour film format.
Bringing in Gardiner and Mylod signals a character-first, prestige approach. Gardiner’s work on Succession and His Dark Materials points to intricate worldbuilding and sharp ensemble writing. Mylod’s track record balancing intimate performances with scale is well documented. Both choices suggest HBO is aiming for a grounded tone, careful pacing, and cinematic craft that aligns with the network’s marquee dramas.
What to expect between now and 2027
- Ongoing casting announcements across Hogwarts faculty, Ministry officials, Death Eaters, and student houses
- Location shoots alongside Leavesden stages, plus significant VFX work after principal photography
- A teaser likely in 2026, once enough footage is in the can, followed by a full trailer closer to premiere
Trade coverage and HBO’s own press materials consistently reference a 2027 launch, so look for a more specific date once season one is deep into post-production.
In the United States, the series is slated to premiere on HBO, with streaming on Max where available. Warner Bros. Discovery has also noted international plans that include additional HBO and Max markets at launch.
