Netflix has reached an industry milestone! Its animated musical fantasy KPop Demon Hunters topped the U.S. box office during its limited theatrical run on August 23rd–24th, 2025, making it the company’s first-ever No. 1 film in theaters. The two-day sing-along event drew an estimated $16–18 million across 1,700 theaters, edging out Warner Bros.’ thriller Weapons, which had been in its third week of release.

The win is a landmark for Netflix, which has typically prioritized streaming over theatrical distribution. While the company has dabbled in award-season releases for films like Roma and The Irishman, it has never seen one of its titles top the box office, until now. Industry analysts describe the feat as “historic,” underscoring the cultural force that KPop Demon Hunters has become.

The film, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, follows Huntr/x, a K-pop girl group who double as demon hunters. Their mission pits them against a rival boy band, the supernatural Saja Boys, with dazzling music sequences woven into the battles. First released on Netflix in June 2025, the movie quickly built a passionate fanbase thanks to its colorful style, sharp choreography, and an infectious soundtrack.

Central to its success is the film’s music. Songs like “Golden” broke out far beyond the movie, climbing international charts and fueling TikTok dance challenges. By the time the sing-along version was announced, demand had reached fever pitch. Audiences treated the theatrical screenings as celebratory events, turning out in large numbers despite the film already being available on Netflix.

The box office performance also hints at a possible shift in Netflix’s strategy. By demonstrating that certain titles, particularly those with devoted fanbases, can thrive both on streaming and in theaters, KPop Demon Hunters may pave the way for other hybrid releases. Whether this experiment becomes a pattern remains to be seen, but the strong response shows there is space for Netflix films to succeed beyond the living room.
