MTV has tapped LL Cool J to host the 2025 Video Music Awards, scheduled for September 7th, 2025, at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. This marks his return to hosting the VMAs, after co-hosting alongside Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow in 2022.
Now 57, LL Cool J has a long history with MTV. He won his first Moon Person back in 1991 and made history in 1997 by becoming the first rapper to receive the Video Vanguard Award. Over the years, he’s appeared in many memorable moments: his recent performance honoring hip-hop’s anniversary in 2023 and his participation in Def Jam Records’ 40th anniversary celebration in 2024 are fresh reminders of his enduring influence.
This year’s VMAs will also be notable for several changes. Lady Gaga leads nominations with 12 nods. New categories, such as Best Country and Best Pop Artist, have been introduced. Also, for the first time, the VMAs will broadcast live on CBS, alongside MTV and streaming via Paramount+
LL Cool J is nominated this year too: his track “Murdergram Deaux” featuring Eminem, from his 2024 album The Force, is up for Best Hip-Hop.
As host, LL Cool J is expected to bring both his veteran stage presence and a respect for the ceremony’s roots in hip-hop and video culture, while guiding audiences through a night of new faces, legends, and hopefully, some unforgettable moments.
