Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at 54, his family and Costa Rican authorities confirmed. Warner passed away on July 20th, while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. He drowned after being caught in strong ocean currents and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports.
Warner had been swimming with his young daughter when they were swept into a dangerous current. Good samaritans and surfers saw the struggle and pulled his daughter to safety. A volunteer lifeguard and other bystanders also attempted to rescue Warner, but despite being brought ashore and given CPR for about 45 minutes, he could not be revived. Autopsy results later ruled his death accidental “asphyxiation by submersion.”
He was vacationing at Playa Cocles off the coast of Limón Province. Local authorities, including Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, confirmed that Warner’s body was recovered and identified.
His Life and Career
Warner was born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He began acting as a child, and his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show (1984-1992) made him a household name. That breakout role gained him an Emmy nomination.
He went on to appear in many television series including Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, Suits, The Resident, and others. Besides acting, he worked as a director, musician, poet, and hosted the podcast Not All Hood. In 2015, he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
News of his death drew heartfelt responses from co-stars and peers. Tracee Ellis Ross, who worked with him on Reed Between the Lines, remembered him as warm, thoughtful, and funny. The NAACP, Fox, and many others issued statements celebrating his talent, professionalism, and warmth.
Warner’s influence was broad: he was a child actor who transitioned into mature roles, took on creative and behind-the-camera work, and often spoke about his pride in the impact of The Cosby Show despite controversies surrounding the show’s creator. He kept much of his personal life private, leaving behind a wife and daughter.
