As part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebrations, Nintendo announced Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, a new adventure exclusive to the upcoming Switch 2 console. Scheduled for Spring 2026, the game gives Yoshi his own spotlight in a richly illustrated storybook setting.

A Storybook World Come to Life

The game begins when Yoshi discovers a mysterious enchanted book hidden in Peach’s library. When opened, its pages whisk him into a magical realm where each chapter unfolds as a fully playable world. Every page introduces new environments—ranging from fairy-tale forests and haunted libraries to desert dunes drawn in parchment-like textures.

Classic Yoshi Gameplay With a Twist

Core Yoshi mechanics return, including flutter jumps, egg throwing, and swallowing enemies to create eggs. However, the “book” theme introduces chapter-specific twists. For instance:

  • In one level, Yoshi must rotate the page to flip between two parallel worlds.
  • Another chapter tasks Yoshi with rearranging oversized storybook letters to form bridges and platforms.
  • Boss encounters emerge as corrupted illustrations—sketch-style versions of familiar Mario enemies like a pencil-drawn Bowser Jr.

Character Support and Collectibles

Throughout the journey, Yoshi encounters allies such as Toadette and Kamek’s magical mishaps that influence the narrative. Collectibles include “Ink Stars”, glowing items scattered across levels that unlock hidden chapters and alternate endings in the book.

The overall goal is to restore the storybook’s missing ending by collecting its lost pages, ultimately freeing the Mushroom Kingdom from the book’s curse.

Designed for All Ages

Nintendo highlighted that the game’s chapter-based design makes it approachable for younger players, while puzzle depth and collectible challenges provide replayability for seasoned fans. The stylized hand-drawn visuals set Yoshi and the Mysterious Book apart from other platformers in the Mario series.
