Sony has announced that its PlayStation 5 has surpassed the milestone of 80.3 million units shipped worldwide as of June 30, 2025. The figure was revealed in the company’s latest financial report, which covers the first fiscal quarter of 2025 (April to June).
Over that quarter alone, Sony shipped 2.5 million PS5 units, matching last year’s performance. That steady momentum reflects enduring player interest even nearly five years after the console’s late-2020 launch.
The PS5 now stands close to its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, which sold around 87.4 million units over its lifetime. If current trends continue, Sony may surpass that mark before April 2026. Software sales and PlayStation Network growth are also powering the platform’s success.
The financial report highlights strong investment in games and network services. Total sales from PS4 and PS5 games reached 65.9 million units in the quarter—an increase of 12.3 million compared to the same period last year. First-party titles made up 6.9 million of those sales. Monthly active users on the PlayStation Network rose to 123 million, up 7 million year-over-year, helping drive a 127 percent jump in operating income.
Sony’s ongoing success underscores the PS5’s resilience in the face of early supply chain challenges and competitive pressure. With blockbuster titles on the horizon, particularly the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in mid-2026, the PS5 may experience further sales acceleration. Some analysts expect a potential surge in purchases as fans upgrade to enhanced hardware like a PS5 Pro for the best gaming experience.
