After a two-decade hiatus, The Simpsons are officially headed back to the big screen. Disney and 20th Century Studios announced on September 29th, 2025, that a new Simpsons movie will hit theaters on July 23, 2027, exactly 20 years after the original launched in 2007.

The announcement came via an Instagram post from 20th Century Studios, featuring artwork of Homer’s hand holding a donut covered in pink frosting and sprinkles shaped like the number “2,” accompanied by the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

Though the release date is confirmed, plot details remain under wraps. However, that hasn’t stopped speculation and commentary from the creative team behind the show. In recent discussions about The Simpsons’ current trajectory, co-showrunner Matt Selman spoke to EW about the challenges of keeping stories fresh after many seasons. He emphasized the importance of character development and originality, citing real life trends, like “dad TV,” thrifting, and ’90s nostalgia as potential inspiration.

Selman framed the sequel as an opportunity to tell a story that “feels like it’s from a show that is not in its 37th season,” while also avoiding repetition. He said that, above all, the characters’ emotional core must remain intact for the audience to care.

The first Simpsons film was a major success. Released in July 2007, it grossed over $183 million domestically and $536 million worldwide. Its plot involved Homer polluting Springfield’s water supply, triggering an EPA crackdown and a town-wide containment scenario.

Interestingly, the new Simpsons movie takes over a theatrical slot that was formerly reserved for a Marvel project. This reshuffling will leave a gap between the Marvel releases Avengers: Doomsday (December 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 2027).

As for the TV side, The Simpsons continues to air weekly. It remains among the longest-running animated scripted shows in U.S. prime time.
