Walmart announced a new partnership with OpenAI that will allow customers and Sam’s Club members to shop directly through ChatGPT using an Instant Checkout feature. The partnership turns everyday shopping into a conversational experience where users can simply chat and buy.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said, “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman added that the collaboration will “make everyday purchases a little simpler.”

A launch date has not been confirmed, but both companies said the feature will roll out soon. Once active, customers will be able to use ChatGPT to find and purchase items from Walmart’s massive inventory without leaving the app.

The Instant Checkout feature is already live for select merchants, including Etsy and Shopify sellers. Through that system, shoppers can buy items directly in ChatGPT using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or card payments. Walmart’s integration expands that idea to one of the largest retail ecosystems in the country.

Walmart already uses artificial intelligence in product cataloging, logistics, and customer service. This new step pushes the company deeper into AI-driven retail and could redefine how people browse and shop online.
